Music

Spring Village has a wealth of musical talent and has a long standing tradition from the days of Burru and prior. In recent years however, the population of singers and musicians has increases significantly which makes Spring Village poised as one of the hot spots in Jamaica to find talent.

Some of our musicians like Lewin "Onedrop" Thomas, has gone on to play professionally as a drummer and tours with various bands around the island. Some of the musicians have won gold medals in the Jamaica Cultural Festival. The Burru group from earlier years were the first to do so followed by a 6 year old drummer (shown below). Interestingly, this young drummer is a direct decendant of Charles Richards who was a medal recipient from the original Burru group.

Did you know that Spring Village is mentioned in the Jamaica Journal (see write up) as one of the key locations in Jamaica to find Burru? Eventhough the Burru group no longer exists, if we take the time to look around, we will see it reborn in the life of this young drummer and others around Spring Vilage.

Studies have shown that children involved in playing a musical instrument or other music activity usually do well academically compared to their piers. Therefore involvement in musical activity affects brain development in a positive way. One of the desires of some musicians in the community is to see a music program created as part of the curiculum at the Spring Village All Age School.

Spring Village Musicians Group

In order to publish their work, the musicians of Spring village have created a group on Facebook called "Spring Village Musicians". Here they showcase their talent and distribute their music. Because of the large number of artists new material is being published frequently and others are joining the group as well.
